In order to help people to decide whether or not a particular site or page is suitable for them or their children to visit without being offended, there are a growing number of Self-certification rating systems based around the PICS system, which allows PICS-aware browsers to alert the user if they are tryng to access a page which they may find offensive, or which can prevent access to certain categories (thereby enabling parents to allow their children to browse freely, knpowing they will not accidentally stumble across unsuitable material).
